Executive Summary

The oil and gas industry is a global, highly competitive, and knowledge-intensive business with high demand for eLearning. This report provides an industry case study of the oil and gas sector and draws out implications for vendors hoping to serve this industry as well as for practitioners in other industries. Case studies of Shell, BP, and Statoil help illustrate key implications and issues for Learning-on-Demand Program clients across industry sectors:
  • Senior managers at oil and gas companies take learning seriously.
  • Financial and other incentives for eLearning are proving to be successful.
  • Communities of practice are effective in enabling informal learning.
  • Knowledge management and eLearning are coming closer together but do not yet enjoy full integration.
  • Use of competence management in eLearning is growing.
  • Blended learning is becoming a reality.
  • Companies are reevaluating their investments in learning-management systems and looking at new types of providers, including those in academia and enterprise-software vendors.
  • Companies still need to encourage learners to use eLearning systems.
  • Bandwidth and network reliability is a problem for global eLearning implementations.
