About This Report

How do eLearning practioners rate the quality and effectiveness of their eLearning programs? Where are the soft spots among eLearning technologies used by practitioners? How do perceptions of quality and effectiveness of eLearning vary by region?

These questions, the subject of much debate as adoption of technology-enabled learning moves from novelty to common business practice, are the focus of a recent study by the Learning-on-Demand (LoD) program of SRI Consulting Business Intelligence. The 24-question, Web-based survey, conducted with the participation of ASTD and other LoD partners, garnered nearly 350 responses from practioners around the globe. This report is an overview of key findings from the survey.

One of the interesting and surprising results of the survey—given the considerable attention in the eLearning literature about drop-out rates and apparent poor quality of eLearning—was that a solid majority of respondents (60%) said that they consider their programs to be "good" or "excellent." But it is worth noting that significant regional differences exist in the results, with European and Asian respondents considerably less impressed by the quality than are their North American counterparts. Another somewhat surprising result was that fully two-fifths of respondents (41%) report to be using eLearning enterprisewide. For the complete results of the survey, please download the report.
