Scan's staff of researchers, analysts, and marketers worldwide scan the business environment for early signals of change. We ask them to search actively during their professional and personal activities for discontinuities and items that contradict conventional wisdom. We're looking for change signals in all areas: society, culture, legal/regulatory environments, consumer behavior, public opinion, science, and technology.
Staff members document the signals that they find in a one-page Scan abstract. This abstract draws inferences about what the item may mean for the business environment in general. In the Scan meetings, abstracts about particular industries form natural clusters.
The Scan Process
Links that connect individual abstracts across industry-based clusters of abstracts are potential defining forces. Following the meeting, analysts working in groups or alone examine signals of change that the process identified, perform additional research on the topics, and detail their findings in Scan publications.
