Internet Ads: A Hindrance or a Help? Following Google’s success with advertising on the Internet, ads are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. Will the new advertising models make ads a help or merely more intrusive? Second Incomes Consumers in the developed world—worried about the credit crunch, increasing food and energy prices, and declines in the value of their properties—are supplementing their primary incomes by engaging in small-scale online commerce, effectively creating second incomes. Web sites such as eBay have already spawned a generation of microentrepreneurs. Online Behavior Alters Offline Behavior Researchers and social scientists are noticing that behaviors that people acquire in online and virtual environments have a tendency to spill over into the real world. The VALS™ Program participates with other SRI Consulting Business Intelligence programs in an environmental scanning process. The scanning process brings together experts in a variety of fields to gather early signals of change within culture, commerce, and technology. The scanning process assesses possible patterns of change and provides companies with the lead time to take advantage of marketplace changes. The items in VALS™ Scan come from a larger set of signals of change because they may have special relevance to marketers. We are always interested in client feedback.
