About the Meeting
This report summarizes some of the proceedings and issues in presentations and roundtable sessions of the one-day symposium that took place at SRI International’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on 28 April 2008. The symposium was organized and sponsored by three organizations: SRIC-BI’s Virtual Worlds @ Work, Accelerate Learning and Development, and the Gronstedt Group. About 35 people from a diverse set of companies and industries—including Sun Microsystems, Silicon Graphics, Infosys, Eli Lilly, Boehringer Ingelheim, TIIA-CREF, Telus, and Raytheon—participated.
In the past year or two, the topic of virtual worlds has seen dramatic interest in the news media. Also, a growing number of conferences have addressed many aspects of virtual worlds. But very little attention has focused on how virtual worlds can transform specific areas of learning and training in corporations. We planned this by-invitation-only symposium to fill this gap and give attendees a unique opportunity to gain in-depth insights into how virtual worlds can help transform corporate learning and training in two specific areas: engaging new employees (onboarding) and executing sales training.
