Overview of Selected Global Pre-WiMax Service Deployments and Trials

About This Report
Unlike wired-broadband infrastructure such as Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL) or cable-television networks, which are very capital-intensive to build, wireless broadband networks relying on technologies such as 802.16-2004 have only modest capital requirements and can reasonably be deployed by small to medium Internet-service providers (ISPs). Many small to medium ISPs have already started to build such pre-WiMax networks ("pre-WiMax" because so far no equipment has passed WiMax certification tests). In some parts of the world, the work of these ISPs will make broadband Internet widely available for the first time. In other parts of the world, wireless broadband will lead to increased price and service competition for both Internet and telephone services.
This report examines the pre-WiMax deployments of six different ISPs. The deployments are in Asia, North America, and Europe and target a diverse group of users. This list of pre-WiMax trials and service deployments is not exhaustive, but it does present a reasonable cross section of present activity in the area.
