SRIC-BI's experts in the digital domain work with leading electronics manufacturers to identify and plan for next-generation products and services. SRIC-BI also draws on the extensive technical resources of SRI International, as necessary. The assignments often involve:
- Assessing technology portfolios
- Identifying and evaluating new product and service opportunities
- Assessing new technology and emerging markets
- Developing business strategies.
Case Study
New-Product Development: From Technical Map to Consumer Target Identification and Prototype Testing to Competitive Analysis
SRIC-BI worked with an international consumer-electronics firm to develop a new consumer product for deliveries over the Internet. The first phase of the project was to investigate the feasibility of integrating several technologies necessary to the product concept and to offer design considerations and recommendations for the selection of these technologies. We identified several new product opportunities for the client as a result of this analysis.
In Phase two, SRIC-BI used the VALS consumer framework and national consumer data to identify the consumer groups most likely to be early adopters of the product. The team then conducted focus groups with the selected consumer types to gain qualitative insight about how they reacted to the prototype system, specific delivery options, pricing, and product name. In several key areas, clear differences existed among the preferences of the selected VALS consumer types, highlighting an opportunity to customize particular features to meet the needs of two different consumer groups. We also conducted a competitive analysis to identify whether similar products were already on the market. |
Recent Projects
- Future Consumer-Imaging Technologies and Opportunities. Scenarios developed by SRIC-BI served as a framework for identifying relevant technologies and as screening criteria by which to judge candidate technologies. We recommended several new imaging technologies for development and exploitation in consumer products.
- Leveraging of Optically Pumped Laser Technology. SRIC-BI developed a number of design and performance goals for the laser technology in the company to guide future development work.
- Competitive Environment for Wavelength-Division Multiplexing Components. We compared and assessed different technology solutions and entry options.
- Market-Entry Strategy in the Display Industry. For an equipment manufacturer that developed a new method for the display industry, SRIC-BI examined the market potential for key display markets and the new method and recommended R&D partners.
- Technology Roadmapping. SRIC-BI established a training program to develop selected staff into "black-belt" experts in technology roadmapping methodologies and processes to improve the client's planning and decision-making capabilities.
