Case Study
Advisory Services on Strategic Issues Facing a National Oil Company
In the past four years, SRIC-BI has been assisting the senior management of a national oil company (NOC) with upstream strategy and organizational issues. We worked on key initiatives:
- New process and organizational design for planning and managing exploration activities. We helped management design the new process, develop an implementation plan, and initiate the implementation.
- Exploration and development plan for new area. For a new offshore gas region, SRIC-BI worked with the newly formed management to develop a strategic roadmap of key decisions and options, an integrated financial model for evaluating options with key stakeholders and setting priorities for the region, an organizational plan, and an external alliance strategy.
- Contracting strategy. We helped design an innovative bid-award-negotiate strategy for a frontier exploration area.
- New-development and production processes. We assisted the E&P management in the implementation planning for an overhaul of management processes and competence management.

Recent Projects
- Assessment of Fuel-Cell Companies. A major European energy company asked SRIC-BI to assess more than 50 fuel-cell-related companies for their attractiveness as potential technology partners.
- Benchmarking of Petroleum-Company R&D Efforts. We assessed the technology capabilities of the R&D staff and physical resources of the world's largest oil company, then benchmarked those capabilities relative to those of other international oil companies (both private and state owned).
- Evaluation of Hydroisomerization Technology. To assist an NOC select a butadiene hydroisomerization process for one of its refineries, we requested and evaluated process disclosures from four licensers.
- Review of Capital Projects Management for a Latin American Oil Company. An SRIC-BI team reviewed the strategy, organization, and systems for planning and executing large capital projects in the refinery division of a Latin American oil company.
- Scenario Implications for Refinery Operations Planning. For one of the largest global players in the refining and petrochemicals business, SRIC-BI helped a management team prepare for and assess the implications of scenarios as part of a special project assessing future refinery facility needs. SRIC-BI integrated macro drivers from the previous study and developed new scenarios based on key refinery uncertainties, such as product demand and quality, environmental conductions, and refinery balances.
- Enhancing Technology Delivery at a Major Oil and Chemicals Company. The company engaged us to improve the quality and responsiveness of technical support and delivery across its varied operations and development efforts.
- Early-Warning System for R&D Portfolio. For an NOC, we developed an early-warning system to monitor a $100 million portfolio of R&D projects by the exploration and production business unit.
- Technology-Intelligence System for an Integrated Oil Company. For an NOC, we designed a comprehensive technology-intelligence system.
