Case Studies
Entry into the Nonmedical Diagnostics Business
A U.S. specialty-chemicals company asked SRIC-BI to assist it in formulating a plan for an initial entry into a nonmedical diagnostics business. SRIC-BI worked with the client for five months to:
- Define the market segments and dynamics of nonmedical diagnostics businesses
- Estimate the size and growth rates of these segments
- Analyze the nature of the competitive landscape
- Develop a selected list of business opportunities
- Profile the business opportunities regarding market size and dynamics, migration potential, technology trends and sources, unmet market needs, and competitive dynamics.
The client is using the results of this project to implement an entry strategy. |
Development of Telematics Products and Services in 2005
SRIC-BI provided project assistance to a global automotive company in planning its intelligent transportation system (ITS) products and service offerings in 2005 on the basis of underlying enabling technologies likely to be available at that time. SRIC-BI provided the company with its view of the telematics market and strengths in Europe, the United States, and Japan/Korea and listed (with reasoning) technology providers with which the company should consider partnering for critical elements to support telematics services. SRIC-BI profiled the short-listed companies, indicating the likelihood of partner potential, IP position, and so forth. As a result of the project, the company is reassessing its links with its existing technology providers. |
Market Outlook for Steel Cord
For a European tire manufacturer, SRIC-BI analyzed the market development for steel cord over ten years. SRIC-BI assessed the steel-cord market, looking at changing demand factors, including the development of the Chinese market, regulatory changes such as legislation concerning tire-pressuremonitoring systems and run-flat tires, and the threat from competing materials technologies. We analyzed technical advantages and the likely evolution of competing technologies in terms of cost and installed manufacturing capacity. The client used the results from these findings in its planning process for steel-cord manufacture. |
U.S. Optics Research Survey
To remain competitive and develop new markets, the client wanted to focus on applying new technology to its existing products and also to determine how new technology could support future products. To assist the client in this effort, SRIC-BI conducted a survey of U.S. technology opportunities in support of the client's current products and potential future products. For specific product/technological issues, the survey identified companies that were actively developing solutions and then compared their technological solutions. |
