FINANCIAL SERVICES FACE A DIGITAL DIVIDE

Younger, educated, relatively affluent consumers are
comfortable running their financial lives on the Internet.
How can financial service providers motivate older, more
skittish customers to learn to use online services?

WILL NEWSPRINT SURVIVE IN AN ELECTRONIC WORLD?

Internet publishing may wound the daily newspaper, but it
won’t kill it. U.S. newspapers will see a chilling erosion
of circulation and advertising—anywhere from 5% to 20%. Less
mature markets in Latin America and Asia still have room for
growth. (Print versus Electronic Media: The Threat to
Newspapers and Newsprint)

RETINAL IMPLANTS OFFER ARTIFICIAL SIGHT

German researchers have come up with a prosthetic retina
that could be a boon to patients with retinal lesions or
limited sight. Tiny arrays of 7000 electrodes mimic the
eye’s natural photoreceptors, and the device uses materials
biologically compatible with brain tissue. (March Machine
Vision Systems Viewpoints)

HDTV FIGHTS STICKER SHOCK

This summer, Thomson Consumer Electronics will try to cure
consumers’ sticker shock by introducing two new HDTV models
at half the price of earlier models. Less satisfying will be
Motorola’s low-cost module that allows analog TVs to decode
HDTV signals. (March High-Definition Imaging Systems
Viewpoints)

HOW’S YOUR E-HEALTH?

Today, hypochondriacs and health nuts alike can find reams
of health information online. The next step for
health-related companies is to motivate people to take
action, whether to interact with their health-care providers
via computer or to buy prescription drugs online. (E-Health:
Content, Connectivity,Commerce)

CORPORATE COFFERS SUPPLY VENTURE CAPITAL

Ambitious entrepreneurs, take note: Corporations can often
take a more relaxed approach to investment than independent
venture capitalists can. Companies are increasingly funding
venture-capital units and business incubators to pursue
interesting ideas that further their business aims. (New
Corporate Venture Capital)

MOBILE SATELLITE SERVICES NARROWLY ESCAPE DISASTER

Hopes for a new era of mobile satellite services crashed to
the ground in 1999 with the bankruptcies of two major
players. Year 2000 is a time of rebuilding, but will the
relatively small size of the mobile satellite market justify
the billions of dollars that the industry is spending?
(Turbulence in Space-Based Mobile Telecommunications
Services)

WILD CARDS SHAKE UP THE STATUS QUO

Maybe the Web will disappear. Maybe the global computer
network will form a worldwide skin of connectivity, opening
a Pandora’s box of privacy and security concerns. Maybe
online shoppers will soon throw all their purchases into a
single shopping cart. B-I-P’s Scan program explores such
wild cards daily, looking for seeds of innovation and
change. (Wild Cards: January 2000)

LIGHTS, CAMERA, DIGITAL CINEMA!

The 35-mm closeup may soon fade from the movie business as
digital technologies allow distribution of movies via
optical discs or satellite. The movie
industry’s objections to digital cinema have begun to melt
away as sound and picture quality improves and distribution
costs drop. (Digital Cinema)

IT’S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT’S HOW YOU INTEGRATE IT
The worker who comes up with new ideas or masters new
knowledge often cashes the biggest bonus checks. But
integrating new knowledge with preexisting knowledge is
equally important. The technology to integrate knowledge
bases is at hand, but many companies have yet to commit to
integration strategies.
