The Roles Genes Play
Completing the Human Genome Project is only the first step
in determining the roles that genes play in health and
disease. Researchers in sequence genomics, functional
genomics, and bioinformatics are currently driving progress
in the field. (Genomics: A Technology Update)

Looser Purse Strings for Small Businesses
A resurgence of community development and enticements for
lenders are prompting more financial institutions to open
their wallets to help small-business owners. Even
oft-overlooked entrepreneurs in disadvantaged groups and
low-income areas will benefit from this largesse.
(Small-Business Financing in Changing Financial Markets)

Broadband Insecurity
Designers of today's computer software and systems did not
have the larger Internet environment in mind when they
created their products. As a result, a host of unintended
security threats hover over home and office broadband
connections to the Internet. (Broadband Security for Home
and Remote Workers)

A Fresh Perspective on Knowledge Management
Managing knowledge is primarily about management and not so
much about knowledge. Companies are wise to focus on
managing knowledge resources rather than knowledge itself,
pursuing optimal use of these resources much as they do for
any corporate resource. (Managing Knowledge Resources)

White Light
White light-emitting diodes may be the technology that
researchers have been looking for to replace more
energy-hungry incandescent lamps and fluorescent tubes.
Another possibility is white light-emitting polymer diodes,
which have attracted attention on both sides of the
Atlantic. (August Conductive Polymers Viewpoints)

Creeping Complexity
At the July 2000 Scan meeting in Europe, complexity was the
dominant theme: women's efforts to manage complex
lifestyles, companies' attemptsto manage complex value
networks, the diffusion of advertising into myriad channels,
and the need for greater literacy to cope with new media and
modern business practices. (Europe Scan: July 2000)

Greater Value through eLearning
Forward-looking companies like Hewlett-Packard and Cisco
realize that tomorrow's competitive advantage will come from
extending eLearning throughout the value chain. New
efficiencies will come from integrating customers, channel
partners, and suppliers in ongoing learning activities.

Neural Networks for Happier Customers
To increase the appeal of voice over Internet protocol,
Cisco Systems is devising software applications that allow
users to combine voice and data in speech-recognition and
customer-relationship-management systems. Neural networks
will undoubtedly have a place in these advances. (August
Neural Networks Viewpoints)

Love/Hate Relationships with Computers
U.S. consumers with resources and a positive view of
innovation welcome computers into their lives, according to
a survey by SRIC's Values and Lifestyles Program. Older
consumers and groups that are less well off see little
reason to hug their computers or embark on Internet
adventures. (U.S. Consumers' Attitudes toward Computers and
the Internet: Highlights of the 1999 VALSTM LeadingEdge
Survey)
A Cubic Mile of Oil
Two veteran SRI analysts have created a new unit of
energy--a cubic mile of oil--to help people visualize how
quickly the world is depleting supplies of hydrocarbons. As
the world burns up one cubic mile of oil a year, governments,
corporations, and the public need to fight the inertia of
hydrocarbon dependence. (Energy's Inevitable Game Change)

IC Makers and Optical Networks: A Case of Nerves?
Along with the usual players, integrated-circuit makers have
stepped up their pursuit of optical technologies. Could this
new interest in all-optical networks reflect nervousness
about optical encroachments on their traditional
technologies? (August Optoelectronic Systems and Circuits
Viewpoints)
