SRIC-BI: A New Company
The Business Intelligence Center of SRI Consulting has
become SRI Consulting Business Intelligence (SRI-BI).
This latest spinout from the SRI International family will
continue its 40-year history of leading-edge thinking
about business, technology, and market demand.

A New Chapter for Electronic Paper
The page-turning joys of the old-fashioned book are not
likely to go away. However, with advances in digital
devices, flat-panel displays, and digital paper and ink,
electronic paper may outshine traditional formats in some
books, magazines, newspapers, signs and billboards, and
maps. (New Electronic Displays: Alternatives to Paper)

eLearning in a Multicultural World
Clear communication is essential for effective learning, and
communication can fall apart if people do not accept
or understand cultural differences. If corporate eLearning
is to reach across cultural boundaries, vendors and
users need to use a variety of eLearning tools and match
initiatives to corporate and national cultures.

New Insights for the Financial Services Industry
Cash remains king in financial transactions, according to
new MacroMonitoring data, but consumers’ use of noncash
media continues to grow. Financial institutions not
only need to support multiple points of access, but
they need to evaluate the impacts of rising assets and a
negative savings rate on their future operations.

The Broadband Revolution at Home
Some 46% of the world’s Internet homes will subscribe to
residential broadband services by the end of 2005,
changing forever how people use the Internet. Always-on
capabilities, new forms of content, and the ability to
network Internet appliances will open the door to
entertainment possibilities not currently available through
dial-up modems. (Adoption of Residential Broadband Services)

Mobile Users at Large
Soon, people will be able to find the nearest restaurant,
ATM, or theater via their personal digital assistants or
mobile phones. Such location capabilities will help fuel a
boom in mobile commerce, assuming that players resolve
issues of cost, privacy, and standards. (Location:
Catalyst for M-Commerce)

The Data in the Haystack
Companies that can efficiently sift through reams of data
and emerge with pithy insights about their customers
or business performance gain a big advantage over
competitors. Thanks to friendlier user interfaces and
falling costs, data-mining technology is now available
to midsize companies as well as large Fortune 500 players.

The Meaningful Workplace
Employees increasingly want to bring their whole selves to
work and to know that their employers value their efforts.
Employers, for their part, realize that fulfilled
employees are more likely to give their all at the office,
boosting company performance in concrete ways. (The
Meaningful Workplace)

E-Signatures
Secure digital signatures are a prerequisite for conducting
many transactions online. Companies need to understand the
limitations of the new U.S. “E-Sign” law as well as the
strengths and weaknesses of public-key infrastructure to
enact effective security policies that win people’s confidence.

Early Signals of Change in Europe
At a recent Scan meeting in Europe, analysts delved into the
latest business intelligence for signs of impending change.
Among the topics that crossed their radar screen were new
possibilities for networked games, e-payment schemes for
children, and rising conflict over intellectual-property
rights. (Europe Scan: November 2000)

New Ad Venues, Infoglut, and the Battle for Consumers’
Attention
Wild cards in the business environment may be the seeds of
tomorrow’s innovations. B-I-P analysts recently pinpointed
several such discontinuities, ranging from new uses of
advertising at offices and schools to growing consumer
impatience with information overload and fierce competition
for the most valuable of commercial commodities: consumers’
attention. (Wild Cards, November 2000)
