Lessons from the Dot-Com Era
Consumer e-commerce has survived its adolescence, and the next
five years should bring relative calm in the wake of the dot-com
boom and bust. In the next phase, e-tailers will focus on
integrating retail channels to improve efficiency, seek to
increase Internet and e-commerce penetration worldwide, and offer
consumers new ways-such as mobile devices--to shop online.

Smart Innovation
Though most firms now accept that successful innovation is a
major source of value, too many companies find themselves with
brilliant ideas in search of applications. The key is to have a
consistent innovation process that invites creativity at every
level of the organization while keeping everybody's eyes on the
company's strategic focus, profitability, and competitiveness.

Prospects for Pervasive Computing
Pervasive computing has value for both consumer and business
markets, promising to change the focus of computing from machines
on desktops to human-centered computing in which computing tasks
fade into the background. However, at a recent SRIC-BI roundtable,
industry experts tempered their optimism with discussions of the
significant barriers that still impede widespread commercial
application of the constellation of technologies that make up
pervasive computing. (Gating Factors on the Road to Pervasive
Computing)

Consumers on the Financial Edge
Household debt has more than doubled in the past ten years,
reaching $7.7 trillion in 2001. Moreover, credit issues will
increasingly haunt households' financial lives, all the way
through retirement. Some consumers will put the brakes on and
start saving more, cutting spending, and limiting additional debt.
Others will have more difficulty exiting the credit cycle and will
continue living on the financial edge. (Living on Borrowed Money)

Learning Objects in Practice
A recent survey by SRIC-BI's Learning-on-Demand Program shows
that a significant gap exists between the promise of learning-
object technologies and their actual role in most eLearning
organizations. Nonetheless, case studies of Autodesk, Shell
Exploration, Cisco Systems, and others suggest that, despite
remaining implementation issues, learning-object adoption is
gathering pace. (Learning Objects in Practice)

Corporate Venturing
Corporate-venturing activity declined some 70% between the
third quarter of 2000 and the same quarter one year later,
with big players like AT&T, Compaq, and News Corporation
closing their venture units in the wake of the dot-com bust.
Indeed, the days of patterning corporate venture units after
private venture-capital methods are gone, and companies are
looking for ways to use venturing for strategic advantage.

A Strategic Role for Computer Storage
The market for electronic storage is evolving from a commodity
market to one that can play an important strategic role for
developers and marketers of consumer-electronics products. By
analyzing storage options in the context of consumer demand rather
than technology categories, companies can make strategic choices
between hard-disk, optical-disc, and silicon storage technologies
for their electronic products. (The Evolving Landscape of Consumer
Storage Media)

Toward Globalization of Mobile Services
In their efforts to develop truly global organizations,
mobile-communications operators would like to roll out many new
common network interfaces that allow applications to talk to the
network. However, cost and time barriers have allowed only limited
standardization to date, so operators are developing middleware
solutions as a transitional step. They are also making greater use
of third-party application developers and systems integrators to
provide ongoing support services. (Developing and Deploying Mobile
Services)
