Medicine at the Molecular Scale

Nanomedicine, a subset of nanotechnology, pursues new
frontiers in medicine via biosensors, diagnostic devices,
drug-delivery systems, and tissue repair and regeneration.
Among the players in this field are biomaterials scientists,
who are particularly interested in drug delivery and tissue
repair and regeneration. In the longer term, in vivo repair
of DNA by a nanodevice may also fall within the realm of
biomaterials research. (November 2002 Biomaterials
Viewpoints)

Global Logistics

To compete in the trade-intense world of the twenty-first
century, companies will need the ability to design, execute,
and manage logistics across multiple international borders,
answering to many local authorities and ever-changing rules.
However, the logistics structures of most companies today
are not up to the task, so shippers are increasingly willing
to form close relationships, and even partnerships, with
external global-logistics providers. (Collaborative Global
Logistics)

Financial Services for Mainstream Minorities

Data from the U.S. census and SRIC-BI's MacroMonitor surveys
can help financial-services providers determine the needs of
mainstream minority households. For example, the high
proportion of older heads of households in the African
American community makes this group receptive to retirement
services. In turn, Hispanic households have growing families
and need mortgages, life insurance, and credit cards. The
youngest group, well-educated Asian households, tends to
have high assets and high debt, making it attractive to
financial institutions. (America's Mainstream Minorities)

Water-Friendly Adhesives

Most current adhesives do not work on wet surfaces or with
low-surface-energy materials. Now, however, researchers are
coming closer to finding solutions to this sticky problem,
introducing products that they claim work in the presence of
water. So far, most such solutions are application specific,
but manufacturers continue to press ahead with their
research. (November 2002 Structural Adhesives Viewpoints)

Japan's Lead in Pervasive Computing

Japan is more active than either the United States or Europe
in R&D into consumer applications of pervasive computing.
This R&D lead is likely to give Japan a leg up in the market
as well, thanks to a combination of factors: ongoing
research at Japanese companies and universities, the
relatively strong mobile-telephony infrastructure (next to
the fixed broadband Internet infrastructure), and consumers'
general receptivity to pervasive computing because of the
existing and continually improving network infrastructure.

Prospects for the Genomics Industry

Genomics will transform scientific research and product R&D,
and it will change people's everyday lives through new
medicines, diagnostics, foods, and materials. In the short
term, however, many unknowns hover over this still-new
science, including difficulties in converting science into
practical knowledge, providing cost/performance benefits,
and resolving many legal, ethical, and social issues that
will determine society's acceptance of genomics-based
products and services. (Genomics-Industry Update: 2002)

Windows-Powered Cell Phones

After many delays, Microsoft launched its smart-phone
initiative on 22 October. The introduction launches
Microsoft's battle for market share against the determined
opposition of today's leading manufacturers of handsets:
Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, Siemens, and others in the
smart-phone operating-system alliance, Symbian, that are
chasing the European global system for mobile
communications/general packet radio system cellular-handset
market. The Microsoft Smartphone 2002 also takes aim at
Palm-powered smart phones from Kyocera, Samsung, and
Handspring. (November 2002 Portable Intelligence Viewpoints)

Instant Messaging in Business

Business applications are beginning to incorporate
instant-messaging and chat features as tools for
collaboration. Industry experts have begun to describe
instant messaging as a form of "presence awareness" because
it allows workers to sense the presence of coworkers and
contact them in a timely fashion for problem solving or
other collaborative tasks. (November 2002 Pervasive
Computing Viewpoints)

The Path to 3G-Wireless Services

Robust and reliable network performance will be critical to
win the North American competition between the two primary
standards for global cellular transmission: global system
for mobile communications and code-division multiple access.
Demand for wireless data services, pricing schemes, and
compelling content will also play a role in North America.
Moreover, wireless operators will need to integrate
wireless-data solutions into readily usable and affordable
packages for subscribers. (3G-Wireless Update: An Early
Market Lead for CDMA2000)
