Markets for Large-Screen TVs
The consumer market for large-screen TVs appears to have
good prospects, with manufacturers and retailers placing
special hope in the near-term outlook for flat-panel
plasma displays. However, analysts in SRIC-BI's Digital
Futures program believe that unit sales of 30-inch and
larger liquid-crystal displays could surpass sales of
plasma sales by 2008 and that increased business use of
front projectors for presentations could open the door for
front-projection TVs in the home. (Market Roadmap for
Large-Screen TVs)

The United States of Asia and Other Signals of Change
A union of economic expediency is emerging among some
Asian countries: Japan is already China's largest export
market, and South Korea now exports more to China than to
the United States. The November issue of Scan Monthly
discusses this and other signals of change, including
China's expanding competition in world markets, the new
domain of eScience, and the risks of brand exhaustion in
markets. (Scan Monthly, November 2003)

Nanotechnology for Structural Adhesives
Incorporating nanosize materials into adhesives promises
to improve the physical properties of structural adhesives
significantly. However, structural-adhesives companies
need to sort through the hype about nanotechnologies'
capabilities and commercial potential. They also need to
be aware of reports of health scares and worries about the
health and safety aspects of some nanomaterials. (November

The Looming Presence of Microsoft Office
The October release of Microsoft Office System positions
Office as a front end to a wide variety of Internet-based
applications in the era of pervasive computing. With
Office System, Microsoft may finally have found a way to
lock Internet users into Microsoft technology much as the
company has locked desktop users into the MS operating
system. (November 2003 Component-Based Software
Engineering Viewpoints)

Business Interest in the Concept of Emergence
In nature, a confluence of many uncoordinated actions by
independent agents can create complex behavior patterns.
The business community is increasingly interested in this
concept of emergence in adaptive systems, finding useful
insights into phenomena as diverse as the global economy
and individual consumers' purchase-decision processes.
Emergence also holds interest for entertainment and
business applications, as well as for organizational
structures and planning processes. (Business Perspectives
on Emergence)

Best Practices in eLearning
Global companies are increasingly establishing new
organizational units to coordinate their learning
activities. They are also creating learning architectures
to guide eLearning initiatives and working to integrate
knowledge and learning systems and processes. At a recent
Learning-on-Demand Program meeting in Dublin, Ireland, an
international group of attendees discussed these and other
best practices in eLearning implementation.

Better Analysis through Text Mining
Text mining, a relatively new analysis technique that
derives from data mining, can analyze content more
extensively than search engines can, analyzing thousands
of pages per hour. The software can also determine
categories of information and link related documents to
help people delve deeply into topics. Although text mining
came out of academia and still finds the greatest use in
research and analysis communities, its use will soon
extend to knowledge workers across corporate functions.

Pervasive Computing in Health Care
Pervasive-computing technologies could help the
health-care industry cut costs and improve efficiency.
Before the market can see widespread growth, however,
developers need to overcome problems such as wireless
data-transmission interference, security issues, short
battery lives, data overload, privacy concerns, and
physicians' resistance to change. (Health-Care
Applications of Pervasive-Computing Technologies)

Interest in Cellulosic Plastics
As supplies of fossil fuels dwindle, renewable resources
will become increasingly important. Cellulose is one of
the most abundant biopolymers in nature, and
cellulose-based plastics have the potential to compete, in
some applications, with the price and performance of
petroleum-based plastics. As a result, the plastics
industry is now examining cellulose more closely as a raw
material for renewable plastics. (November 2003

Privacy Strategies for Businesses
Companies increasingly need integrated privacy strategies
to address customers' concerns as well as their own
security needs. These strategies need to establish
coherent internal privacy policies, inform customers of
how the company will or will not use the information it
gathers, and provide for organizational security.
Increasingly, companies need to offer customers real and
tangible benefits in exchange for private information, and
an opt-out provision for customers can help build trust.

The Strategic Role of eLearning
SRIC-BI consultants have been briefing corporations in
Europe, Japan, and the United States on opportunities to
improve business performance via new learning approaches.
The presentations draw on recent project work and the
Learning-on-Demand Program, laying out likely future
developments in eLearning and discussing best practices to
help both vendors and users of eLearning products and
services determine what their future strategies should be.
